Put Together a Sexy Flapper Costume

A beautiful flapper costume is one of the most popular at costume parties.

Year after year women get dressed up as flappers and head out to have fun in not only a great costume, but a beautiful dress.

Your costume is what you make it.

There are many ready-to-wear costumes available (link below). I recommend pairing one of these dresses, with some great inexpensive "costume jewelry," and a great wig this would fit perfectly with the spirit of the 1920s.

Getting the Look Right

This site is filled with hundreds of original photos of flappers and 1920s celebrities. Any of these photos would be a great inspirational starting point to put together the perfect costume.

Whether you decide to wear a vintage dress from your closet, or you choose a sexy flapper costume from one of the many great online stores, what you choose depends more on the "look you're going for, your budget, the costume party theme, and whether or not you'll be dancing (or walking a lot).

Fit: Not too loose, Not too tight

It's really important to have a costume that fits well, because you want to feel comfortable while still looking great.

If you had to choose between fitting a little small or a little large opting for a little small is probably the wise choice. Not only will a smaller dress look better on you, while enhancing some of your "natural assets," you'll also avoid having to pull your dress up every 30 seconds. Not to mention the risk of going fully convertible.

Bobbed Hair

One of the most important elements of pulling off a great flapper costume is getting your hair right. Look around this site and you will find flappers wearing their hair in a short "bobbed" style. Cut right below their ears, and their bangs cut straight above their eyes.

To complete the look you'll have to have short hair, or you'll need a decent wig to pull off the look.

Costume Jewelry

Another often overlooked yet vital element of your 1920s costume is your flapper-style jewelry.

Coco Chanel, the godmother of flapper fashion, loved costume jewelry called it "illusion jewelry." She would decorate and accessorize her simple dress designs with gaudy strings of pearls, large pendants, flashy beads, etc.

These days you certainly should be able to find this type of jewelry in a thrift store or dollar store for a couple of bucks.

Shoes: Cuban Heels

Many women will tell you that of all the things, your shoes are most important. Not only because they tie your sexy flapper costume together, because an uncomfortable pair of heels will hurt your feet. You don't want blisters a week after your costume party.

To get the right look for your costume I recommend "Cuban Heels," as they were the most popular style shoe for the flapper. Often you can find them in various colors and heights. They are good for both looking good and for dancing.
